Abstract

Background: During a given year, almost 30% of the people around the world are affected by mentally ill health. In India, it accounts for about 20%. Caregivers face a lot of strain, burden ill health, and disrupted family life, with literature suggesting an increasing concern about their ability to cope up. The needs of caregivers of the mentally ill are given low priority in the current health-care setting in India. Mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder can represent disruptive and disabling conditions for patients and, in the meantime, a severe burden for their family and society. Family members can positively support patients by providing care Directly but, sometimes, can also negatively influence clinical conditions by showing express emotions, stigma& caregiver burden toward patients. Aims: The present study aimed at exploring and comparing the burden of care in spouses of schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder patients along with perceived expressed emotion & stigma by the patients of these disorders. Materials & Methods: Outdoor and indoor patient of MHI (COE), SCBMCH, Cuttack, Odisha, were taken for study. The Data will be conducted with 60 spouses of the schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder patient in accordance to the DCR ICD- 10 criteria by purposive sampling method . Among the total sample, 30 will spouses of Schizophrenia patient and 30 will spouses of bipolar affective disorder patient in accordance with the inclusion &exclusion criteria of the study. Results: It is clear that stigma leads to negative outcomes for those with mental illnesses. Conclusion: No significant difference in level of express emotion, stigma caregiver burden among spouses of Schizophrenic & BPAD Pts.
