Abstract

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting functional mobility and quality of life (QoL) in elderly patients. Educational nursing interventions may help manage symptoms and improve outcomes. Objective: To evaluate the effect of an educational nursing intervention on functional mobility and QoL among elderly patients with PD. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. The study included 60 elderly patients with PD, randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n=30) or a control group (n=30). The intervention group received a 7-session educational program focusing on PD management, including exercises and daily living activities. Pre, post and follow up intervention assessments were conducted using the Parkinson's disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) and short physical battery scale (to assess functional mobility) Results: the mean age of elderly patients with PD was 64.2±1.1 year. The intervention group showed significant improvements in functional mobility and QoL as compared to the control group. The mean scores for FMS and PDQ-39 improved significantly post-intervention (p<0.05). Conclusion: The educational nursing intervention significantly enhanced functional mobility and QoL in elderly patients with PD. Such interventions should be integrated into the routine care of PD patients to optimize outcomes.
