Background: Nonverbal behavior plays a pivotal role in shaping leadership perceptions in business contexts. While verbal communication is often emphasized, visual cues such as posture, eye contact, gestures, and facial expressions critically influence judgments about a leader’s competence, authority, and charisma. Aims: This conceptual paper explores how specific nonverbal behaviors impact perceptions of leadership and authority within professional business settings, drawing insights from secondary video based analysis. Methods: A qualitative video-based analysis was conducted on publicly available recordings of notable business leaders (e.g., Simon Sinek, Sheryl Sandberg, Satya Nadella). Observational coding focused on four main nonverbal cues: posture, eye contact, facial affect, and gesture control. Thematic analysis was used to extract patterns and contextual insights, with cross-validation conducted by three independent coders using NVivo software. Results: Expansive posture and direct eye contact were consistently associated with higher ratings of dominance, competence, and trustworthiness. Facial congruence with speech tone enhanced perceived authenticity and charisma. Gestural restraint and visual calmness under pressure were indicators of executive presence. However, biases related to gender and race influenced how nonverbal signals were interpreted. Conclusions: Leadership perception is significantly shaped by visible behavioral cues, often before speech begins. These visual signals construct a leader’s authority and influence in business environments, yet interpretations remain context- and identity dependent. Awareness of this dynamic is essential in leadership development, executive coaching, and inclusion practices.
